Global warning puts Winter Olympics at risk, says Alma’s Sandy Hulme.

“The tenuousness of the Winter Olympics has become increasingly more obvious with global warming,” said Derick L. Hulme, an Olympic historian at Michigan’s Alma College. “It (the International Olympic Committee) should be very concerned about the Winter Olympics. I think many people look out 20, 30 years from now and are concerned about whether the Winter Olympics will still be viable.”

President Abernathy writes about his experience teaching a Spring Term class that included touring a wind farm and Superfund site and kayaking in the Upper Peninsula. “I was reminded…that what we do at liberal arts colleges is hard work: our faculty, at their best, engage our students’ deepest passions, working alongside them as they discover the deepest connections of our traditions to their own lives and aspirations,” he wrote.

London confirms the practice of sport is a human right.

Olympic historian Derick Hulme, Jr., a political science professor at Alma College, says the U.S.-China competition is reminiscent of Soviet-U.S. sports rivalries of the ’70s and ’80s. “Certainly we don’t—and thankfully so—have the fear of a nuclear war in the background,” says Hulme. “But we are talking about who is going to be the leader of the 21st century. And given the events of the last four years—the economic slump in Europe and the economic problems in the United States—the sense was that China came out of it best.”

Morgan Beeler

Morgan Beeler
Graduation: 2014
Major: Environmental Policy

When Fremont junior Morgan Beeler first visited Alma College, she immediately crossed it off her list of potential college choices. But once she took a better look at all the opportunities Alma gave its students, she says she quickly reconsidered.

“I’ve been able to get involved in so many amazing things here: Public Affairs Institute, P-Global, Model UN, Center for Responsible Leadership, Kappa Iota and Alma Symphony Orchestra,” she says. “Not only are all of these experiences going to benefit me on a graduate school application, but they have really molded me as a person. I now know who I am and what I want to do with my life.”
