Survey finds employment picking up for the first time since 2007 for new graduates. “I’ve heard research about how the class of 2011 would have a better chance of finding jobs out of all the graduates since the beginning of the recession,” said Alma College graduate Kate Love, who continues her job search.

Colleges help graduates in repaying loans.
Some small colleges, including Alma College, are offering to help students pay off their loans after they graduate. “When we have an excellent student we know will be successful here (but) who has that anxiety about student loans, this is one more tool for us,” said Jeff Abernathy, president of Alma (Mich.) College, which is testing the concept with about 10 students this fall. “We are making myriad attempts to help our students find their way to a private liberal arts education, (particularly) students who might feel like they've got to go to a lower-cost public institution.”

Bike program encourages students to leave their cars at home.
“The campus should not be a monument to the automobile,” said Alma President Jeff Abernathy. “You want to have the community coming together face-to-face in an active, thriving social space. And the automobile tends to deaden that.” Alma is launching the Get Out Bike Program this fall, in which first-year students sign a pledge to leave their car at home in exchange for a discounted bicycle.
