Alma College will offer three new major areas of study in 2011.

“We’re looking at U.S. health care as a system and comparing it to outer countries,” says Dale Sanders, director of the new health care administration program. “We’re teaching the tools that can give the students a foundation to ask the good questions.” Health care administration, biotechnology and environmental studies are the new programs.

One reason, according to Alma College geologist Murray Borrello, is because DDT is an effective killer of mosquitos. “No question, it’s a quick fix,” he says. Alma College hosted a DDT conference in 2008. A consensus statement called for the continued ban of DDT.

Alma College students have the ability to design their own area of academic concentration—with the assistance of a faculty advisor—to meet specific educational or career goals. In recent years, students have graduated with Programs of Emphasis majors in such fields as arts management, archaeology and anthropology, environmental policy and community advocacy, Foreign Service and international law, and music technology and digital media.

Jaycee Nelson

After quitting cheer in high school, Belleville senior Jaycee Nelson thought she had hung up her pom-poms for good. But when she came to Alma College, she decided to give the sport another try.

“Cheer is a lot of hard work, but it’s also very rewarding,” she says. “The team is one of my strongest support groups on campus, and we have a lot of fun together.”
