Alma students explore Calvin's thoughts on “vocation” or “calling.”

Student winners announced in the Alma College Student Calvin Contest. “John Calvin acknowledged the religious importance of work that was done for the common good,” said Professor Brian Stratton. “He wrote that ‘no task will be so sordid and base provided you obey your calling in it, that will not shine and be reckoned very precious in God’s sight.’”

Jeff Abernathy is named 13th president of Alma College.

Alma’s innovative PRISM project—Positive Routes Into Science and Mathematics—gets more students excited about science. It engages students in research opportunities not only in their first, second, third and fourth years of college but also in the summer prior to taking their first college course. PRISM is funded by a $500,000 grant from the National Science Foundation.

Dr. Melvin Nyman
Departments: Mathematics

Melvin Nyman found his job at Alma simply by chance. A job posting led to a Good Friday interview between family events.

More than 30 years later, he is a professor in the math department and has been the mayor of the city of Alma since 2002.
