Mentor Michigan Award grants celebrate mentors during Michigan Mentoring Month.

Alma College received a mini-grant for its Mentor Plus program. "The future of Michigan's children is the responsibility of all citizens," said Governor Jennifer Granholm. "By strengthening young people through mentoring, we are building a stronger future for them, our communities, and our great state."

Robert Vivian is the author of a new novel: “Lamb Bright Saviors.”

Vivian is an associate professor of English at Alma. “Writing influences the teaching I do,” said Vivian. “I look at novels as a reader and a teacher but also as a writer.”

Silver was crucial for WWII bomb.

Cameron Reed, physics professor at Alma College, looked at government microfilms to trace the odyssey of the silver from New York to Oak Ridge. Reed said that if all the silver borrowed by the Army were made into a cube, the dimension of each side would be 35 feet.

Winter Olympics has a California flavor.

IOC embraces snowboarding and freestyle skiing, illustrating the growing influence of California culture on the Olympic movement. “The challenge is how not to alienate the Olympic purists and at the same time make sure the Winter Olympics are viable,” says Olympic historian and Alma College professor Derick Hulme.

Birds keep watching: Feathered friends are a part of winter, too.

Alma College biologist Mike Bishop bands birds. He collects data to determine just what is going on in the bird world. Using nets he places on the ground, he has little trouble banding them and locating them later on in the summer, or even the next year.

Arsenic can be found in water.

The hit and miss distribution of arsenic contamination can be blamed on the glaciers, said Alma College geologist Murray Borrello. Copper, lead and other metals were deposited here and there, sometimes from one glacier after another.

More than one-third of all Alma students take part in at least one performance each year. The College offers majors in theatre, dance and music, but students of all majors may join in productions. The Remick Heritage Center for the Performing Arts is the region’s premier performing arts facility.

Dr. Melvin Nyman

Dr. Melvin Nyman
Departments: Mathematics

Melvin Nyman found his job at Alma simply by chance. A job posting led to a Good Friday interview between family events.

More than 30 years later, he is a professor in the math department and has been the mayor of the city of Alma since 2002.
