Jade Paquin ’17

Hometown:

Muskegon, MI

Major(s):

Integrative Physiology and Health Science

Type of Alma Venture experience:

Spring Term, Off-Campus Study

Summary of your experience:

I traveled to Peru to participate in medical-based service learning in a disabled children’s clinic.

What did you learn as a result of this experience?

I learned how important the the act of giving back is and all the problems that we faced just showed how important good communication is. I also was constantly reminded of how there’s beauty in all places, no matter how rich or how poor.

How has your Alma Venture solidified or altered your career goals?

This experience will help me in my future because it will give me a step up from my competitors when applying to graduate school.

What advice would you give a student considering this type of Alma Venture?

I think that no matter your major or ability to speak another language, anyone could gain a new look on life and learn so much more about the world and themselves that they could not gain in a classroom. I now see things a little bit differently and I will be much more grateful for having schoolwork after seeing many very poor schools in Peru.
