Susan Cross

The Alma College Library is a place of service.  Cross has helped provide Interlibrary Loan/MelCat services to the campus community, as she works with libraries throughout the state, and internationally.  “I truly enjoy assisting students and faculty with their research needs by providing an efficient service they can count on in their time of need”.

Having worked in Interlibrary Loan for the past 17 years, 14 of those years at Alma College, Susan has experienced many changes in resource sharing. Two interface changes with the main Interlibrary Loan service have led to the current WorldShare. This interface will help amplify and extend library cooperation locally and internationally.

In 2005, Susan helped implement MeLCat, a statewide service which includes Michigan libraries consisting of academic, public and K-12 schools. MelCat is a statewide union catalog and provides resource sharing among all 431 libraries.

With these recent changes in software and technology, Susan is committed to providing the quality service that her patrons depend on.

Title

Interlibrary Loan/MelCat Specialist

My career at Alma began in

1999

I help students by

borrowing materials we don’t own in our collection, and lending our materials to other libraries.

Educational background

Associate, 1986, Great Lakes Junior College of Business

In my role at Alma, I get most excited when...

I can help a student and faculty member obtain materials needed for their research needs.

What I love most about Alma College is...

I enjoy working with my student assistants. Watching them grow as individuals from their freshmen year to their senior year is amazing. They learn time management skills and how to juggle academics, work and sports into their busy schedules.

I chose to work at Alma College because...

I received a warm welcome from the library administration. They were very interested in my knowledge and previous work experience coming from a larger academic library.
