Dr. Nichols is the conductor of the three Alma College Choirs. The Glee Club, College Chorale and the Alma Choir have a combined membership of more than 150 Alma students.
The Choirs perform together each year at Homecoming (October), the Festival of Carols (December) and the Masterworks Concert with the Alma Symphony Orchestra (April). The Alma Choir travels across the United States each February and overseas every other year. In May 2014 the Alma Choir traveled in Scotland for two weeks. A 2010 tour to Ireland included the Choir’s participation in the Cork International Choral Festival. Previous concert tours have taken the Alma Choir to Italy, Poland, France and Belgium and the Czech Republic.
Dr. Nichols is also a professional singer. As a bass/baritone soloist he has sung with virtually every symphony orchestra and oratorio society in Michigan. He has sung internationally as a member of the Internationale Bachakademie Stuttgart and the Gächinger Kantorei. For 20 years he has sung with the professional chorus of the Oregon Bach Festival and he has sung on many of the OBF’s CDs including the 6-CD release of Haydn Masses, the Handel Messiah and the Penderecki Credo – which won the 2001 Grammy for best choral performance.
