The Alma College Jazz Ensemble will highlight the chicken tunes of contemporary bassist, educator and composer Kris Berg at the group’s annual fall concert.
The performance begins at 8 p.m. Monday, Nov. 25 in the Remick Heritage Center. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for seniors 62 and up, and free for Alma College staff, students and youth 18 and under. Seating is reserved. Call (989) 463-7304 for ticket information.
“We are playing several of Berg’s arrangements, which are fun to play and sound great,” says Carlos Melendez, director of the jazz ensemble. “The theme of our concert is ‘Chicken Fried Jazz — the music of Kris Berg.’”
The theme relates to the titles of Berg’s selections on the program, including “The Chicken,” “Talk Is Cheap,” “Pecking Order,” “Flew the Coop” and “Feather Report.”
The program also will feature “Satin Doll” by Duke Ellington and “Fancy Pants” by Sammy Nestico.
Berg has written charts for many artists and college jazz bands. His popular series of “chicken” funk tunes have sold thousands. He is director of jazz studies at Collin College in Texas.
