Recreation Center Adds New Equipment, Services

October 11, 2013

New recreation equipment consists of three treadmills, two elliptical machines, a stair climber, recumbent bike, regular bike, table tennis table, rowing machine and four high-definition televisions.

The Alan J. Stone Recreation Center at Alma College is offering more opportunities for students, faculty and community members than ever before—including new equipment and services and a new membership system.

The new equipment consists of three treadmills, two elliptical machines, a stair climber, recumbent bike, regular bike, table tennis table, rowing machine and four high-definition televisions.

Users of the new treadmills and the recumbent bike will have access to wi-fi while using the equipment, says Tammy Rees, director of campus recreation.

“People need access to recreation,” says Rees. “It provides stress relief, improves mental health and is just plain fun.”

In addition to the new equipment, the recreation center is offering several new services. These include a towel service, a credit card machine and lap counters that allow people to record how many laps on the track they have completed.

The new membership system will scan student, faculty and community member IDs, allowing Rees and other recreation workers to count how many people are using the recreation center at different times throughout the day. This will lead to better efficiency and customer service, says Rees.

The recreation center also has hired a new full-time worker, Garrett Thelen. Having another full-time worker will lead to more tailored and consistent customer service, says Rees.

An Alma College alumnus, Thelen is the assistant director of recreation and conferences. He enjoys interacting with students and community members in addition to using the recreation center to climb, play basketball and lift weights.

“I would advise people to try out something new,” Thelen says. “The recreation center has a ton of activities for people to experiment with.”

The center also offers four basketball, volleyball and/or tennis courts, a suspended three-lane running track, 600-square-foot climbing wall, fitness room with more than 30 cardiovascular machines, and shower and locker facilities.

The recreation center is open 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. Fridays, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturdays, and 1 to 11 p.m. Sundays.
