Students Inducted into Prestigious National Honorary

Alma College’s membership in Phi Beta Kappa is an indication of excellence within the liberal arts. 

Two Alma College seniors have been selected for membership in Phi Beta Kappa, America’s oldest and most prestigious scholastic honorary society.

New members were announced April 2 at Alma’s 2014 Senior Dinner. Also recognized were seven students who were inducted in 2013 as juniors into Phi Beta Kappa.

Founded in 1776 at the College of William and Mary, Phi Beta Kappa recognizes excellence in liberal education, stressing intellectual discipline and achievement. Members are selected on the basis of their outstanding academic achievement in the traditional arts, sciences and humanities. Eligibility requires at least a 3.75 grade point average (GPA) for a junior and a 3.50 GPA for a senior. Among other requirements are proficiency in college mathematics and a foreign language. Alma College’s chapter, founded in 1979, is one of 283 in the United States and one of eight in Michigan.

Those students are:

Kelsey Blades of Cedar Springs, MI, is a 2010 graduate of Cedar Springs High School. Inducted as a junior in 2013, she is the daughter of Kerry and Beth Blades of Cedar Springs, MI.

Christine Cuthbertson of Fort Gratiot, MI, is a 2010 graduate of Port Huron Northern High School. Inducted as a junior in 2013, she is the daughter of John and Tamara Cuthbertson of Fort Gratiot, MI.

Gwendolyn Greer of Novi, MI, is a 2010 graduate of Novi High School. She is the daughter of Dale and Martha Greer of Novi, MI.

Chloe Grounds of Ortonville, MI, is a 2010 graduate of Brandon High School. She is the daughter of Patrick and Cheryle Grounds of Ortonville, MI.

Jacob Hammer of Allegan, MI, is a 2010 graduate of Allegan High School. Inducted as a junior in 2013, he is the son of Jeffrey and Rebecca Hammer of Allegan, MI.

Margaret Heeschen of Midland, MI, is a 2010 graduate of Herbert Henry Dow High School. Inducted as a junior in 2013, she is the daughter of William Heeschen and Judy Gunderson of Midland, MI.

Michael Reeves of Lisle, IL, is a 2010 graduate of Lisle High School. Inducted as a junior in 2013, he is the son of Mark and Laura Reeves of Lisle, IL.

Christy Robinson of Ortonville, MI, is a 2010 graduate of Brandon High School. Inducted as a junior in 2013, she is the daughter of Brian and Cheryl Robinson of Ortonville, MI.

Cory Townes of Livonia, MI, is a 2010 graduate of Churchill High School. Inducted as a junior in 2013, he is the son of James and Debra Townes of Livonia, MI.
