Eames chairs still going strong at Alma College Library

The “comfy chairs” are actually pretty fancy chairs too.

They have been a favorite lounging spot for students for nearly five decades.  Besides being comfortable, the chairs are actually a famous modern furniture design know as the Eames Lounge Chair.  The chair was designed by Charles and Ray Eames for the Herman Miller Furniture Company in 1956.  Herman Miller still sells a modern version of this chair.  An example of the Eames chair is in the permanent collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Modern Design.  Local lore has it that our group of Eames chairs was donated to the college by a local professional when updating his office sometime around 1965.
