New Members Inducted Into Phi Beta Kappa

Alma College inducts students into the nation’s most prestigious honor society.

Five Alma College students have been selected for membership in Phi Beta Kappa, America’s most prestigious scholastic honorary society. Also recognized were three students who were inducted in 2016 as juniors: Samantha Kulhanek of Shelby Township, MI; Heidi Michael of Oak Park, MI; and Marianna Smith of Ludington, MI. New members were announced April 21 at Alma’s 2017 Senior Dinner.

Founded in 1776 at the College of William and Mary, Phi Beta Kappa recognizes excellence in liberal education, stressing intellectual discipline and achievement. Members are selected on the basis of their outstanding academic achievement in the traditional arts, sciences and humanities.

Eligibility requires at least a 3.75 grade point average (GPA) for a junior and a 3.50 GPA for a senior. Among other requirements are proficiency in college mathematics and a foreign language.

Alma College’s chapter, founded in 1979, is one of 286 in the United States and one of eight in Michigan.

The following students were inducted:

Kaitlyn Urick of Glen Ellyn, IL, is a 2013 graduate of Glenbard West High School. She is the daughter of Jon and Lori Urick of Glen Ellyn, IL.

Cameron Spitzfaden of Charlotte, MI, is a 2013 graduate of Charlotte High School. He is the son of Erica and Laura Spitzfaden of Charlotte, MI.

Alexis Bowe of Grand Rapids, MI, is a 2013 graduate of West Catholic High School. She is the daughter of Gregory and Kippi Bowe of Grand Rapids, MI.

Marianna Smith of Ludington, MI, is a 2013 graduate of Ludington High School. She is the daughter of Gerald and Diane Smith of Ludington, MI.

Sarah Neeley of Montrose, MI, is a 2013 graduate of Hill-McCloy High School. She is the daughter of Charles and Laurie Neeley of Montrose, MI.

Heidi Michael of Oak Park, MI, is a 2013 graduate of International Academy. She is the daughter of Gordon and Christine Michael of Oak Park, MI.

Samantha Kulhanek of Shelby Township, MI, is a 2013 graduate of Eisenhower High School. She is the daughter of Donald and Terri Kulhanek of Shelby Township, MI.

Luke Ashton of Omaha, NE, is a 2013 graduate of Fort Calhoun Junior-Senior High School. He is the son of Christopher and Julia Ashton of Omaha, NE.
