Alan Gatlin, an accomplished senior executive with a 30-year career in finance and management, has been named chief operating officer (COO) and vice president for finance and administration at Alma College.
A resident of Alma for the past 16 years, Gatlin will work collaboratively across campus sectors to allocate resources and manage day-to-day operations in the new role of COO. His appointment is effective June 5.
“I’m enthused by the extensive experience that Alan brings as a senior executive with a track record of success at every position he has held,” says Alma College President Jeff Abernathy. “He knows Alma College, enjoys ties to our community and is a strong advocate of the liberal arts. I welcome Alan and look forward to our partnership.”
Gatlin’s career includes 12 years as a CEO, successfully leading companies with more than $250 million in revenue and over 1,000 employees, and 18 years of accounting and finance experience in public accounting and private organizations.
From April 2015 to the present, Gatlin has served as president, CEO and COO for W.W. Williams, a Columbus, Ohio-based company that provides mechanical and repair services for the transportation industry.
Previously, he held president, CEO, CFO and vice president positions during 14 years with ETX Inc., an automotive parts holding company that comprised three manufacturing companies, including Alma Products. He also served three years as a vice president and CFO for Northstar Aerospace Inc.
“I’m excited about the opportunity to join Alma College,” says Gatlin. “I’m looking forward to this pivot in my career, moving from the private sector to working at Alma College. I see this as an opportunity to continue to grow professionally, as well as offer my skills and expertise to an institution and a community that I care deeply about. I look forward to working with Dr. Abernathy, the Board of Trustees and everyone at the college in pursuit of our strategic plan goals.”
A strategic advisor to the president, the COO serves as Alma’s chief financial officer, overseeing the college’s operating budget and focusing upon strategic matters of the college’s operation such as financial analysis, debt structure and capital projects.
The COO also oversees the college’s finance and administration sector, which includes financial services, facilities management, information technology services, mailing and printing, food services and the college bookstore.
Gatlin has a bachelor of science degree in accounting from Murray State University. His daughter, Amanda Gatlin, is a 2014 graduate of Alma College. His past community activities have included memberships on the Gratiot Area Water Authority and the Gratiot Community Hospital’s community relations board.
