Great Scot: John MacArthur

Analyzing data keeps John MacArthur busy in his role as director of institutional research.

President Jeff Abernathy has recognized John MacArthur as December’s Great Scot for his contributions and service to the campus.

MacArthur joined the Alma College staff in 2014 as research analyst, charged with gathering and analyzing data to support institutional planning and decision-making and document the outcomes of a liberal arts education.

“In particular, his detailed work this past year has made a profound difference for improving our understanding of student success in the areas of persistence and retention,” wrote Abernathy in his monthly update to the campus. “I’m grateful to John for his work.”

With the growing importance of identifying and analyzing data to support the college’s continuous improvement efforts, MacArthur has been granted a new title, director of institutional research.

MacArthur has bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the Mississippi State University. Prior to his role at Alma, he was a psychology technician and participant pool manager at Dickinson College.

President Abernathy periodically presents the Great Scot Award to members of the faculty and staff for “excellence in service to Alma College.”
