VERSION HISTORY

dates and features

Eye Lines, introduced in 1990, was the first experiment generator for psychology to run on both Macintosh and Windows.

Version 5.0    11/2009    Eye Lines re-introduced as a Free service to researchers and educators
1.Completely rewritten for current hardware and operating systems
2. Software is a single integrated application
(instead of the separate modules required by the memory-starved computers of the 1990s.)
3. Multiple adjustment channels allow simultaneous manipulation of multiple objects or characteristics
4. New adjustment types: line width, horizontal position, vertical position, and point of attachment of one line on another.
5. Experiment generator allows an unlimited number of stimulus fields per trial
6. Support for most common image file formats (jpg, tif, bmp, etc.) as either stand-along stimuli or as components of EL images (eli).
7. Data sorting tool includes a spreadsheet editor
8. More consistent function and interface across platforms
9. Discontinued: Rotary pursuit tracking, Hidden target maze learning, Mouselock, Brightness adjustment

2006-2009   Eye Lines withdrawn due to obsolescence. New version in development

Version 3.1  3/2003
Update to improve compatibility with Mac OSX Classic mode and Windows XP home

Version 3.0  11/2001
1. Three new psychophysical methods:
      Method of Constant Stimuli
      Method of Limits
      Adaptive Staircase method
2. Improved interface for EL set facilitates use of multiple stimulus fields.
(requires that adjustment and target information be specified in EL draw.)
3. Adj. menu in EL draw for specifying and testing image adjustments.
4. Hidden target maze learning (Morris Water Maze)
5. Mouslock.
6. Out-of-path Alarm for mirror drawing task.
7. Multi-dimensional data reconfiguration in EL sort.
(also available in free data utility EL Knife)

Version 2.52   10/99
Maintenance release to fix problem with Mac memory management.

Version 2.5  10/97
1. Blocks: experiments can be divided into blocks with separate order and cycle controls.
2. Random Access: EL run's new Jump command allows instant access to any trial.
3. New labeling options for sorted data output (suppress header, add ID codes)
4. New Data Viewer in EL sort displays both raw (.dat) and sorted (.out) files.
5. Screen erasure can be turned off for any field (eliminates blink, adds successive stimuli).
6. (MAC only) Direct use of PICT files as stimuli (without importing or linking).
7. (MAC only) New Eraser function for studies of drawing.

Version 2.1  11/96
1. mm calibration for individual monitors - automatic conversion of length data to mm.
2. EL draw's Preview will provide feedback following an adjustment.
3. Adjustment target values can be specified in EL draw (rather than EL set)
4. In addition to difference scores, EL sort will process: raw adjustment scores and response latencies for any field.
5. Drawing and Pursuit experiments: misc enhancements:
  a. ID codes no longer case sensitive.
  b. Can handle missing trials.
  c. Replay of pursuit trials shows target cursor.
6. New demonstration: McCollough Effect.

Version 2.0  9/95
1. Three new experiment types have been added:
  a. Mirror Drawing (effects of distorted feedback on motor performance and learning).
  b. Pursuit tracking (rotary pursuit).
  c. Studies of Drawing & handwriting.
2. Beep signals or continuous metronome pulses in any stimulus presentation field.
3. (MAC only) Brighness of achromatic stimuli can be made adjustable.
4. EL draw enhancements:
  a. Increased 200 seg capacity for Preview.
  b. More precise drawing cursor.
  c. improved text editing.

Version 1.6  5/94
Eye Lines is now fully linked to the file structure so that:
1. You no longer need to keep applications and files in a single folder (directory).
2. (MAC only) Double-clicking on any EL file will open the appropriate application.

Version 1.5  11/93
1. You can now adjust multiple objects without linking them all together.
2. EL run can read adjustment specifications directly from the pic file.
3. New segment types: CIR, FILL allow you to draw a circle or fill an area.
4. (MAC only) Incorporate standard PICT format images into Eye Lines pics.
5. Clearerase (EL draw Opts menu) sets entire screen to clear during adjustment.
6. The tracks command (EL draw Info menu) shows path of a manipulation.

Version 1.1  10/92
1. Preview manipulation in El draw.
3. Intelligent copy and paste functions in EL draw preserve object relations.
4. Specify stimulus background color.
5. Both horizontal and vertical mouse movement can be used for manipulation.

Version 1.0  9/91
1. Method of adjustment for size, length, position, and orientation.
2. EL draw - CAD style drawing program for constructing pecise stimuli.
3. EL set & EL run - Experiment generator with as many as 4 stimulus fields per trial.
4. Trials presented in fixed, random or counterbalanced order.
5. EL sort - Sorting module for reconfiguring data into a variety of formats.
6. Demonstrations and simple experiments in visual illusions.

The License fee of $99 for 6 copies ($199 for 20 copies) remained in effect until 2006.
All upgrades were without charge. In 1992, Psychology Software News gave Eye Lines its highest
(four star) ratings for both content and usability.

Preliminary version   11/90
1. Mouse control of the length or angular orientation of selected elements in a line drawing.
