While the department admits students to all lower-level courses and grants the BA degree in Art without prior submission of portfolio, a portfolio is required for acceptance into the BFA program. This portfolio should be submitted when the student has completed 24-36 credits in Art and must be submitted by December 1st of their Junior year.

To apply:

1. Download a BFA application form or pick one up from the department secretary and fill it out.

2. Write and type a first draft resume. Sample resumes from past art students are available for reference at the department secretary's desk. The Center for Student Development also has great resources on resume writing.

3. Establish the format for your portfolio. This may include original work, slides, and digital media. *Get help from advisor on this.

4. Shoot slides. Watch for posted notices for slide shooting demonstrations each term and/or download slide shooting tips.

5. Mount or mat original work.

6. When the resume is drafted and the slides have been processed, put together the elements of the portfolio. Both the resume and portfolio should be arranged to emphasize the most outstanding work. Slides and original work should be arranged to show relationships between ideas and/or media.

7. Show the portfolio and resume to your advisor and other faculty members and revise as necessary.

8. Submit the completed portfolio, resume and BFA application to the Department Chairperson.

Acceptance decisions are made by the Department during regularly scheduled meetings. Written notification follows the Department's decision. A rating sheet from each faculty member and student representative will be returned with the portfolio to provide feedback on the work and suggestions for future work. (sample portfolio review sheet) Occasionally, a student's first application to the BFA program is not accepted. If this happens, the student should consult his/her advisor and prepare to reapply.
