Class of 1984
BFA in Art and Design; teaching certificate from Spring Arbor University
Profession: Middle School Art Teacher
Location: Mason, MI
"I graduated with a BFA from Alma College in 1984. I was married in the same year. I pursued a career in Art but the best I could do was managing the Picture Framing Dept. at Hudson's in the Detroit area. I feel that I received the best "art " education in teaching me the different mediums and all the art history I wanted. I do believe our dept lacks the "know what do I do?" for students that receive an art degree and do not want to sell their works or go to grad. School.
"So, I moved to the Lansing area and got a job as the head picture framer for Saper Galleries, a high-end art gallery in East Lansing. I worked there for 7 years and was fortunate to frame a real Chagall, Van Gogh, among other famous artists. I decided to go into the picture framing business for myself and be able to stay home more with the kids. I do believe that Alma gave me the ability to venture out on my own. I did that for about 5 years and continue with it today, but... I wanted more. That business does not pay the bills. I started volunteering at school and got my foot in the door for subbing. I subbed for 5 years before realizing my dream of becoming an art teacher. At Alma, they advised me NOT to go into teaching because I would not find a job, because it was too overflowing with graduates. I went back to school to Spring Arbor University and received my teaching certificate and was fortunate to obtain a teaching position in art at the middle school in Fowlerville. This is my third year there and I love it!!! I am involved in the Michigan Art Education Association and am a Regional Liaison. I still don't have much time to create my own artwork, but I am teaching group lessons at night to Mason students.
"So a word to the wise is : follow your dreams, know what you want to do and go for it. I spent many years just letting life go by and settling for whatever. Know what you want. Live your dreams. Have a passion for whatever you do and you will succeed in life. I still visit the art professors at Alma every homecoming. Stay connected to art contacts. Make art in important part of your life."
