Class of 1999
BFA in Art and Design (sculpture)
MFA in Sculpture from Western Michigan University
Profession: Professor and Studio Sculptor
Location: Mt. Pleasant, MI

"Early in my career at Alma, I simply wanted to make art and live the life of a college student.  I began with an interest in graphic design and drawing.  The hands-on nature of sculpture held a gravitational-like pull on me.  This pull swayed me from the computer and I continued to spend my time in the sculpture studio.   I spent a semester working as an artist's apprentice/assistant in New York City.  The program was organized through the Great Lakes College Association.  This experience made a significant impact on me and I decided to pursue a MFA degree after graduating from Alma College.  Graduate school was a rewarding experience which led me to teaching at the college and University level.  Since completion of the MFA degree, I have taught courses at Alma and currently work in the Art Department at Central Michigan University.   My current position includes teaching undergraduate and graduate students, department administration and technical advising/instruction in a variety of art media.

"Alma College provided a solid liberal arts education with an excellent atmosphere.  The professors at Alma challenged me to become a creative problem solver with a thorough understanding of my interests and media.  The general education courses and electives opened my eyes to the rich history of the world around me.   The strict requirements of my courses further engaged my work ethic and desire to learn.

"Words of wisdom to aspiring artists?   I tell my students to experiment with a variety of tools, techniques and materials.   Technical ability and creative problem solving coupled with material understanding will allow you to best express your ideas and beliefs.   The development of a personal artistic visual language is challenging, thought provoking and very satisfying to me.
