Assistant Coach Joseph Whitman 

Joseph Whitman has joined the Alma College Cross Country coaching staff for the 2007 season. He is two years removed from an outstanding career as a runner for the Scots.

Since graduating from Alma College with a Bachelor of Arts in Exercise and Health Science in April of 2005, Coach Whitman has spent time as a MHSAA official, a Physical Education Teacher at Fulton Middleton Elementary School, and as a Middle School Girls Track Coach at Fulton Middleton.

While a runner at Alma College, Whitman received first and second team All-MIAA honors, was named the Team MVP of Alma College Track in 2004 and Cross Country four times (2002, 2003, 2004, 2005).  Whitman also served as Captain on five different teams while representing the Scots. Whitman also served as a Resident Assistant for two years and holds a Level 1 USATF Coaching Certification

Coach Whitman brings Alma College experience and a history of success in the program that will allow him to not only help the student-athletes excel in competition, but also in every aspect of the Alma College experience.

 

Alma students can explore the environmental wonders of the Galapagos Islands, practice Spanish language skills, study Ecuadorian culture, complete coursework in business finance, and fulfill a South American internship in entrepreneurship through Alma College's one-of-a-kind partnership with Equatorialis University in Quito, Ecuador.

Gordon Aldrich

Gordon Aldrich was a late addition to the Alma College Coaching Staff in the summer of 2007. Coach Aldrich has joined the Alma College Family as the Cross Country and Track and Field Head Coach.

During his 26 years as a varsity Boy’s and Girl’s Cross Country Coach, Aldrich has won a Girls Open State Championship (1978), a Girls State Championship (1995), two Boy’s State Championships (1994, 1997), and was Runner-up on seven other occasions. During the same time, Aldrich coached teams to 17 conference championships, was nominated for the Michigan Interscholastic Track Coaches Association Coach of the Year 12 times for cross country, and walked away with the award four times (1994, 1995, 1996, and 1998). He was also named the Boy’s Cross Country National Coach of the Year in 1999 by the National Federation Interscholastic Coaches Association.

Aldrich was also honored with Michigan High School Coaches Association Track Coach of the Year in 1985 and 1998, and has received the Charles Sweeney Michigan Coaches Hall of Fame Track and Field Award.
