Scot Runners Place Fourth at Hope Invitational

The Alma College men's cross country team opened its 2006 season with a fourth place finish at Hope College's Vanderbilt Cross Country Invitational Sept. 2.

Steven Kuhlman paced with Scots with a 22nd place finish in a time of 28:45. Hope's Ryan TerLouw won the race in 26:28.

Team results: 1. Cornerstone University, 2. Hope College, 3. Albion College, 4. Alma College, 5. Grace Bible College.

Alma individual results: Steve Kuhlman 28:45, Wade Peacock 29:06, Steven Rose 29:48, Ben MacMurray 30:34, Alex Montoye 30:45, Kyle Hill 31:22, Dane Curth 31:47.

Spring Term at Alma is a one-month immersion on a single academic topic that offers learning experiences not typically available during the more traditional 15-week fall and winter terms. For example, during Spring Term ’08, students toured cultural sites in Argentina, studied lizards in Jamaica, analyzed World War II topics at the British National Archives in London, performed music in Italy, and examined the natural wonders of New Zealand.

Coach Profile

Gordon Aldrich

Gordon Aldrich was a late addition to the Alma College Coaching Staff in the summer of 2007. Coach Aldrich has joined the Alma College Family as the Cross Country and Track and Field Head Coach.

During his 26 years as a varsity Boy’s and Girl’s Cross Country Coach, Aldrich has won a Girls Open State Championship (1978), a Girls State Championship (1995), two Boy’s State Championships (1994, 1997), and was Runner-up on seven other occasions. During the same time, Aldrich coached teams to 17 conference championships, was nominated for the Michigan Interscholastic Track Coaches Association Coach of the Year 12 times for cross country, and walked away with the award four times (1994, 1995, 1996, and 1998). He was also named the Boy’s Cross Country National Coach of the Year in 1999 by the National Federation Interscholastic Coaches Association.

Aldrich was also honored with Michigan High School Coaches Association Track Coach of the Year in 1985 and 1998, and has received the Charles Sweeney Michigan Coaches Hall of Fame Track and Field Award.
