Alma Runs With State's Toughest Competitors at Michigan Intercollegiates

The Alma College cross country teams traveled to the Michigan Intercollegiates Friday (Oct. 7) where they faced competition from Divisions I, II and III from around the state.

The women's team finished 17th on the day but was paced by Erin Hemerling's (Hastings) time of 16:29.5. Lapeer East's Sarah Nicholas (18:15.9), Trenton's Joyce Kallgren (18:25.5) and Middleville's Stehpanie Simon (19:01.9) rounded out finishers for the Maroon and Cream.

The meet was won by Grand Valley State for the women with a team time of 14:09.2.

For the men,  Alma was 12th as Steven Rose (Essexville/Garber) led the team with his time of 13:21.0. Midland Dow's Kyle Hill (13:36.4), Houghton High's Erik Johnson (15:16.0) and Ben Kosal (15:27.6) were finishers for the Maroon and Cream. Calvin's men's team won the race with a team time of 11:59.6.


 

Since 2003, twenty-three Alma College students have won prestigious national fellowships, scholarships and awards, including 13 Fulbright fellowships and multiple Udall, Truman, Marshall and Gates-Cambridge scholarships.

 

Coach Profile

Gordon Aldrich

Gordon Aldrich was a late addition to the Alma College Coaching Staff in the summer of 2007. Coach Aldrich has joined the Alma College Family as the Cross Country and Track and Field Head Coach.

During his 26 years as a varsity Boy’s and Girl’s Cross Country Coach, Aldrich has won a Girls Open State Championship (1978), a Girls State Championship (1995), two Boy’s State Championships (1994, 1997), and was Runner-up on seven other occasions. During the same time, Aldrich coached teams to 17 conference championships, was nominated for the Michigan Interscholastic Track Coaches Association Coach of the Year 12 times for cross country, and walked away with the award four times (1994, 1995, 1996, and 1998). He was also named the Boy’s Cross Country National Coach of the Year in 1999 by the National Federation Interscholastic Coaches Association.

Aldrich was also honored with Michigan High School Coaches Association Track Coach of the Year in 1985 and 1998, and has received the Charles Sweeney Michigan Coaches Hall of Fame Track and Field Award.
