Alma Travels To MIAA Championship Saturday

ALMA, Mich. - Alma College men's and women's cross country travels to the MIAA Championships Saturday (Oct. 30) in Grand Rapids. Calvin College hosts the annual event at its brand new, on-campus course. The Championships will be the first collegiate races ever run at the facility. Full race coverage can be found at Calvin's website, http://www.calvin.edu/sports/mxc. The men's 8K race begins at 11 a.m., while the women's 6K race begins at Noon.

The MIAA Championship serves as the final of two conference races of the season. The MIAA Jamboree, held Sept. 25 at Hope, counts one-third toward the MIAA Championship while the Championship race makes up the final two-thirds.

The Alma men's team finished the MIAA Jamboree tied for fifth with Kalamazoo while perennial MIAA powerhouse Calvin finished atop the jamboree standings. Individually, Joe Whitman (Davison, Mich.) finished 20th in a time of 26:45. On the women's side, the Scots took sole possession of fifth place while Hope took the top spot and individually Andrea Miller (Cadillac, Mich.) paced the Scots with her 12th-place finish in a time of 19:54.

Alma has been idle since hosting the Alma Invitational on Oct. 16. The Scots' Miller finished 10th in that race with a time of 24:25.28. For the men, Whitman was again Alma's top finisher, crossing the line in 27:03.79 for 11th place.

Following the MIAA Championships, the Scots return to Alma where they host the NCAA Great Lakes Regionals Nov. 13.

Coach Profile

Gordon Aldrich

Gordon Aldrich was a late addition to the Alma College Coaching Staff in the summer of 2007. Coach Aldrich has joined the Alma College Family as the Cross Country and Track and Field Head Coach.

During his 26 years as a varsity Boy’s and Girl’s Cross Country Coach, Aldrich has won a Girls Open State Championship (1978), a Girls State Championship (1995), two Boy’s State Championships (1994, 1997), and was Runner-up on seven other occasions. During the same time, Aldrich coached teams to 17 conference championships, was nominated for the Michigan Interscholastic Track Coaches Association Coach of the Year 12 times for cross country, and walked away with the award four times (1994, 1995, 1996, and 1998). He was also named the Boy’s Cross Country National Coach of the Year in 1999 by the National Federation Interscholastic Coaches Association.

Aldrich was also honored with Michigan High School Coaches Association Track Coach of the Year in 1985 and 1998, and has received the Charles Sweeney Michigan Coaches Hall of Fame Track and Field Award.
