WOMEN'S TENNIS: Scots Finish Florida Trip With Five Wins in Six Matches

The Alma College Women's Tennis Team return from Florida riding high off of a 5-1 record that saw them dominate many of their opponents.

The Scots started competition on Feb. 23 when they faced off against Ohio Northern University and came away with a 5-4 win. In the match, Alma took the #2, #4 and #5 singles and the #2 and #3 double matches.

Alma followed up their first win of the season with their only loss on the trip as they were nipped by The University if Pueto Rico 8-1. The Scots only win of the match was in the #3 single competition where Laura McKendry (Canton) got the 5-7, 7-6, 10-8 win to protect against the sweep.

The Maroon and Cream followed up the let down with four straight wins starting with a dominating 7-2 win over Emory & Henry. In the contest, Kelly Schwartzkopf (Dryden/Almont) and Margaret Curtiss (Saginaw/Nouvel C.C.) each won their singles matches and paired up to win the #1 doubles by the score of 8-2.

The momentum kept rolling as Alma took the courts against St. Petersburg College and sent them away with a 6-3 loss. Standing out for the Scots were a pair of freshman, Kelsey Erwin (Fenton) and Katy Rice (Lake Orion), who took the #5 and #6 singles to record their first collegiate singles wins.

The next day, AC put up another win against John Carroll this time defeating them by the score of 5-4. The bottom half of the Scots line-up stepped up to carry them to the win as their five Ws came from the #3, #4, and #5 singles and the #2 and #3 doubles. Lindsay Wagner (Lapeer/East) had a solid day as she won her singles match 7-5, 6-0 and paired up with Emily Noss (Traverse City/Central) to grab the #2 doubles by the score 8-2.

In the second match of their last day of play, the Maroon and Cream continued their dominating play with a solid 8-1 victory of Southeastern University. Heather Spratt (Ada/Lowell) was just one of the Lady Scots who played well, as she brought home her singles match by the score of 6-2, 6-4.

Of their 5-1 record on their spring trip, Head Coach Jim Fox commented, "This was a really good trip for us. Coming up with five wins was a great performance and has given us a great start to the season."

The Lady Scots will have a week to rest and practice before hosting St. Joseph College - Ind. for a dual match on Mar. 4 with a starting time of 4 p.m.

 

The Alma College Percussion Ensemble performed at the prestigious Centrum Jazz Festival, an international festival in Port Townsend, Wash., in July 2007. Alma was the only college group invited to perform. “It’s a huge honor,” says faculty director Dave Zerbe. “You can’t apply to perform there; they seek you out.”

Alma College Athletics appointed Cheyenne Luzynski as head volleyball coach beginning with the 2007 spring non-traditional season. Luzynski is the eighth head coach in the 31-year history of Alma College volleyball.

Luzynski has served as an assistant volleyball coach for two seasons and has led the junior varsity program during that time. She has served as an assistant coach with the men’s basketball program, leading its junior varsity program and is an assistant coach with the men’s and women’s track and field teams at Alma College. Additionally, Luzynski has been named an assistant Athletic Director and serves as the Senior Woman Administrator within the department.
