Alma Ends 2006 Campaign at MIAA Championships

Alma College women's tennis ended the season eighth in the MIAA with an eighth place finish at the MIAA Tournament over the weekend.

At one singles, Jessica Eichorn lost to Calvin's Amy Zeilstra 6-4, 6-3 and lost in the consolation bracket to St. Mary's Kristen Palombo 6-1, 6-1. She ends the season 2-16 overall and 0-8 in MIAA matches at one singles.

In number two singles play, Laura Kendrick opened with a 6-3, 7-6 (1) loss to Jaclyn Mummaw of Olivet before tearing through the consolation bracket, defeating Amanda Steiner of Tri-State and Tiffany Fisher of Adrian to win the consolation bracket. She ends the season 6-13 overall and 1-7 in MIAA matches.

At three singles, Kelly Schwartzkopf lost to Hope's Ashley Leary 6-0, 6-2 and then won 6-3, 6-4 agaisnt Mallory Bailey of Olivet before losing to Laura Spencer of Kalamazoo 6-0, 6-2. She ends the season 8-10 overall and 8-9 at three singles and 4-4 in MIAA play.

In number four singles action, Kristen Minter lost to Kalamazoo's Smitha Gudipati 6-1, 6-1 and again to Adrian's Sarah Gallow 6-3, 6-0 and ends the season 2-6 overall and 1-2 in MIAA play.

Five singles saw Amanda Leppek open with a 6-0, 6-2 loss to Kalamazoo's Lindsay Zuehlke and defeating Stephanie Waidely of Tri-State in consolation play 6-2, 6-3. She ends the season 4-11 overall, 4-8 at five singles and 2-5 in MIAA play.

At six singles Avis Groath lost in opening round action to Hope's Kim Coleman 6-0, 6-0.

In doubles action, Jessica Eichorn and Laura Kendrick lost to Hope's Anneliese Fox and Sami Stille 6-1, 6-0 and in consolation bracket to Tri-State's Amanda Waidely and Holly Kimball 7-6, 6-4.

At two doubles, Kelly Schwartzkopf and Lindsay Wagner lost to Calvin's Annie Huizenga and Kari Lipinski 6-2, 6-3 in first round play and defeated Lindsey Struble and Mallory Bailey of Olivet 6-3, 6-7, 7-6 (2) in consolation play.

At three doubles Kristen Minter and Amanda Leppek lost in first round action 6-2, 6-3 to end the season.

 

Alma College’s teacher preparation program was rated “exemplary” in 2007 following a comprehensive review by the Michigan Department of Education.

Terry Smith

Smith graduated from Michigan State University with a B.S. in Physical Education in 1984. After graduating, Smith got his start in coaching when he was the boy’s basketball coach at Fulton High School while working as a teacher at Ithaca High School. From there he moved to Cedar Springs High School were he coached and taught and won his first district championship in 1987.

The following year, Coach Smith got his first taste of coaching in the college ranks when he was an assistant men’s basketball coach at Ferris State University and was part of the team that won a GLIAC Championship and advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA DII Tournament.

After a year at FSU, Coach Smith left for Lake Superior State University where he served for three years as an assistant coach before being promoted to the head coach position in 1991. In five years time, Coach Smith had turned around the LSSU program. In 1996 his team won the first League Championship for LSSU since joining the GLIAC in 1978. During this time, Coach Smith also earned his M.A. in Physical Education from Central Michigan University.
