Scots Give Back to Local Community

ALMA, Mich. - The Alma College women’s tennis team may be months from taking to the courts, but they continue to proudly represent the Maroon and Cream, recently volunteering in the local Alma community.

Head coach Chi Ly, Laura Kendrick, Lisl Steusloff, Carly Uthoff, Avis Groath, Emelia Shroyer, Lindsay Wagner and Rachel Ferris began work with Community Cafe last week at the First Presbyterian Church in Alma, Michigan.

The first time that the team had volunteered with Community Cafe - a weekly outreach that takes place every Thursday at the First Presbyterian Church, within walking distance of the Alma College campus - they served over 100 people, as the program does each week.

“This was a first for all of us and a positive experience all the way around,” said head coach Chi Ly. “All of the players mentioned that they wanted to be involved again and continued to speak about the opportunity to give back to the local community. All of us got far more out of the evening than we put into it.”

Ly, also the head coach of the women’s soccer program, will help at Community Cafe on Nov. 17 with the women’s soccer team.

Alma’s “green” residence hall, Wright Hall, was completed in January 2005. The modern, 60-bed apartment-style hall features a number of environmentally friendly features, including geothermal heating and cooling, recycled-content ceiling tiles and carpeting, energy-efficient windows, rooftop solar heating panels, energy-efficient showers and washing machines, and a computerized energy monitoring system.
