Jeff Hosler '02, joined the Alma College Athletics staff as the Scots women's soccer coach in 2006 and has helped the Maroon and Cream rise as one of the most talented young teams in the MIAA, one that reached the league championship in 2008 for the first time in school history.
Alma finished the ’08 campaign with a record of 12-7-1 (7-3-1 MIAA) and the 12 wins was a program-tying best. In addition, the Scots’ second place finish is Alma’s highest finish in women’s soccer.
“We had a tremendous 2008 season, and it will go down in the record book as the most successful women’s team in Alma history in terms of our place in the conference standings,” said Hosler. “Most importantly though, was that we improved on a daily basis. I believe the girls have gained the understanding of what it takes to move this program in the right direction.”
Hosler, a 2002 graduate of Alma College and a standout on the soccer pitch for the Scots, has built a program that is on the rise and he looks for even better results in his fourth season on the job. During his tenure, Hosler also has created the Reserve program, which allows even more players the ability to experience Alma Soccer.
During his playing career at Alma, Hosler became one of the best players in the 30 years of Scots soccer. He remains the all-time assists leader and ranks in the top ten in career goals and in the top five in career points. He helped the Scots to their second MIAA title, first-ever NCAA Regional Championship and first-ever NCAA Final Four appearance in 1999 en route to first team All-MIAA and third team All-Mideast Region honors. He would go on to earn first team All-MIAA accolades again in 2001 and was named to the conference's second team in 2000.
Before returning to his alma mater, Hosler spent four years coaching at both the high school and club levels as well as working as a retail manager at Back of the Net Sports in Lansing.
He has served as the head coach of East Lansing High School's freshmen boys and girls soccer teams and worked as a varsity assistant with the soccer and boys basketball programs. At East Lansing he assisted in four conference championships, three state semi-final appearances and the 2005 boys soccer state championship.
Additionally, he has coached at the premiere club level with CA United and Michigan Rush with the ’93 boys, ’95 boys, ’96 boys and ’99 girls, advancing in tournament play past the round robin stage 12 times and winning six tournament championships. He has also served as CA United’s Technical Director, Youth Academy Consultant and Residential Camp Director.
He has also worked as an AAU girls basketball head coach with the Capitol City Express with the 16 and under team, qualifying for the state tournament in spring '06.
Hosler has worked as a coach and director of myriad camps and clinics, including Central Michigan University, Michigan State University, Grand Valley State, CA United, East Lansing Soccer Club and Soccerzone Community Residential Camps. Hosler founded the Alma College residential and high school pre-season camps and serves as its Director.
He also works for the USYSA as an evaluator in Michigan's Olympic Development Program. He holds a United States Soccer Federation (USSF) National "C" License as well as the USYSA National “Youth” License.
