Scots Women's Soccer defeats Kalamazoo 2-1 in two overtimes to clinch 3rd place in the MIAA

Much was on the line this afternoon when the Alma Women's Soccer team took on MIAA foe Kalamazoo College on the road. The Scots knew they were in the league playoffs, but needed a win to clinch third place and guarantee a home playoff game for the second consecutive season.

"Today's win was an important one for us," said Alma Head Coach Jeff Hosler. "Finishing in the top three in this league shows that our program is going in the right direction. The parity in the MIAA is impressive and we are fortunate to be where we are heading into the playoffs."

The resilient Scots fell behind 1-0 late in the first half, but fought back to tie the contest in the 77th minute and then won in dramatic fashion in the second overtime, to take the match 2-1 and finish in third place. Alma will now host Albion College in the first round on Saturday. Start time is scheduled for Noon at Scotland Yard.

"Hosting a playoff game is important for our program as we move forward," said Hosler. "Albion beat us earlier in the season and we respect what they have accomplished this season. We like the fact we get to wake up at home and go to our field, but we know that they will be ready."

Alli Meurer notched a goal and an assist in the big win at Kzoo on Wednesday

After Alma hit the post early in the first half, the majority of the scoring chances came from Kalamazoo, who kept the pressure on Scots Sr. GK Katie Weicksel (Northville, MI/Northville), who was up to the challenge. The Hornets scored the only goal of the first 45 minutes, when Stephanie Verbeek hit the back of the net on a pass from Megan Burns at 43:40.

The game remained 1-0 until Alma's So. F Alli Meurer (Holland, MI/Zeeland West) notched an unassisted goal at the 77:34 mark to tie the game and eventually send it into overtime. After a scoreless first extra session, the Scots completed the intense match when Fr. M Elaine Cunningham (Ada, MI/Forest Hills) scored at 105:52 on a goal assisted by Meurer. The tally made it a 2-1 Alma win and vaulted the Scots to their third place finish.

So. GK Monica Witt (Clio, MI/Clio) played the entire second half and overtimes and was very solid in net for the Scots as she had seven saves, helping Alma to the win.
