SCOTS WOMEN'S SOCCER DROPS 2-1 DECISION TO NORTHWOOD

Alma College's 2009 Women's Soccer team traveled to Northwood University in Midland, MI on Wednesday afternoon to begin the regular season portion of their schedule against the Division II Timberwolves. The Scots fought hard, but dropped a 2-1 decision that was not decided until overtime. Alma is now 0-1 in the 2009 campaign, while Northwood improved to 2-1 in their young season.

“I thought the better team won today,” said Scots Head Coach Jeff Hosler. “We played well in spurts and as a first game, you always walk away with things that need to be improved. We have a hard working group of girls and they know what they need to do moving forward. A positive of today was that we were able to see a lot players and use different combinations. This is why you play tough non-league games – to get ready for the MIAA.”

The only goal of the first half came at the 15:02 mark when Northwood’s Mallory McCarthy scored her third goal of the season, assisted by Alyssa Whims and Amanda Watson on a shot from 11 yards out front. The Timberwolves had an eight to three shot advantage against the Scots and Sr. Goalkeeper Katie Weicksel (Northville, MI/Northville).

The Scots kept plugging away against Northwood and So. Midfielder Carly Reising (Otsego, MI/Otsego) tied the game at 1-1 on a 12-yard shot at the 78:02 mark, assisted by So. Forward Alli Meurer (Holland, MI/Zeeland West). Neither team was able to dent the net the rest of the way in regulation and Northwood went into the overtime period with a 19-8 advantage in shots, including nine to five in the second half.

Carly Reising notched Alma's only goal

The Timberwolves finished the contest at the 100:19 mark, when Amanda Watson notched her third goal of the season, assisted by Allyson Delaluz on a shot that went of off the crossbar down right side and into the net. It gave the Division II Timberwolves a hard-fought victory over their Division III brethren from Mid-Michigan.

The Scots next play against Kenyon College on Saturday in Gambler, OH and then versus #20 Denison College on Sunday in Granville, OH.
