WOMEN'S SOCCER: 2007 Post Season Awards

Alma, Mi.- Recently the Alma College Women's Soccer Team held their year end banquet and announced their post season awards.

NSCAA TEAM ACADEMIC AWARD

For the sixth consecutive year, the Scots were awarded the NSCAA Team Academic Award and had an overall GPA of 3.375.

MIAA ALL ACADEMIC HONOR ROLL

Earning MIAA Academic Honor Roll Honors were (from left to right) sophomore Tara Fitzsimmons (Marshall/Marshall), senior Kim Hoeltzel (Clawson/Clawson), Angie Szatkowski (North Muskegon/North Muskegon), and Christine Wheatley (Canton/Salem).

MIAA ALL CONFERENCE

Being named to the All-MIAA second team were Alma College sophomore Kelly Walsh (Linden/Fenton) and freshman Jessica Swan (Romeo/Romeo).

For Walsh, this is the second year in a row she has earned this honor and as a sophomore has proven herself as an up and coming player in the MIAA. Walsh was the play maker for the Scots team that doubled their win total from the year before and seemed to be right on the brink of becoming one of the elite teams in the conference. Her toughness set the tone for the entire Scots team, and the intensity she shows on the field demands the same effort from all those in the Maroon and Cream that share the field with her.

One of the reasons Walsh was able to concentrate more on distributing the ball this season was the emergence of freshman Jessica Swan as one of the most dominant scorers in the MIAA. Swan led the league in goals scored with nine and also lead in total points with 20. Swan is a dangerous offensive player who has a knack of finding the back of the net from anywhere on the field and her tireless attacking sets her apart from the rest of the MIAA. Swan also eclipsed the Alma College single season goals scored record, recording 16 overall goals in her freshman campaign.

Team Awards (Voted on by players and coaches)

Captain Award: Christine Wheatley - Wheatley served as the sole captain throughout the 2007 season and was key in the team's success, providing leadership and experience to a very young Maroon and Cream squad.

Most Significant Player: Tara Fitzsimmons and Jessica Swan - Fitzsimmons and Swan were the tandem of attacking forwards that every college coach hopes for during the 2007 season. With their outstanding play, both student-athletes found themselves making a mark in the Alma College record books as Fitzsimmons moved into the top ten in all time career points and Swan set a new single season goals scored mark.

Crest Award: This award is given to the player who prides herself on academics, teammanship (defined as putting the team before herself), commitment and attitude, and social responsibility. This year's honoree was senior Kim Hoeltzel. Hoeltzel was a solid force in the back for the Scots and provided senior leadership along with battling through injuries all season, showing heart, dedication and an unselfishness that was contagious.

Coach's Award: This award has the same criteria as the Crest Award but is chosen by the coaching staff alone. Sophomore Britni Patrick (North Muskegon/North Muskegon) was honored with the 2007 Coach's Award. Patrick is a coach's dream as her tireless effort, good spirit, and winning attitude could not help but rub off on her teammates. Patrick played on the outside and the team relied on her speed and distribution ability. This was essential for a team that saw a high level of offensive production during the 2007 season tallying 101 points, up from 41 just two seasons ago.

The Alma College Women's Soccer coaching staff would like to congratulate all of their deserving post season award winners and thank them for all their efforts in the 2007 campaign.
