WOMEN'S SOCCER: Scots Lose Heartbreaker, Fall 3-2 in OT

Alma, Mi.- The Scots came in to today's game with a 5-1-1 record and had their eyes set on knocking off Wilmington College who was ranked #7 in the Great Lakes Region entering this weekends games. The Scots played well enough to win, but gave up goals in the last minute of each period and fell in overtime by the score 2-3.

The first 44 minutes and 45 seconds of the game were spent in a back and forth scoreless battle until a Wilmington goal broke the tie with 15 seconds left in the period, taking the 1-0 lead in to halftime.

Alma came out of the break and took control of the ball and in the 62nd minute, as Tara Fitzsimmons (Marshall/Marshall)found teammate Jessica Swan (Romeo/Romeo) deep in the Wilmington zone who took the ball all the way down to the endline before arching a beautiful shot up over the goalkeeper's head and into the back, top left corner of the goal.

Less than six minutes later, the Scots found the back of the net again as Tara Fitzsimmons (Marshall/Marshall) received a beautiful pass from Morgan Rudd (Jackson/Jackson) and beat the goalkeeper to give Alma the 2-1 lead.

The Scots kept the lead through 89 minutes and looked like they were going to come home with the win. However, in the final minute, Wilmington got a break away off of an Alma College corner kick and tied the score, sending the game in to overtime where Wilmington won it in the 99th minute.

The loss was an unfortunate one for the Scots, but they must rebound as they start their MIAA conference schedule later this week when they will travel to Adrian College on Thursday.

The Corporation for National and Community Service named Alma College to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll With Distinction for exemplary service efforts and service to disadvantaged youth. The Honor Roll is the highest federal recognition a school can achieve for its commitment to service-learning and civic engagement.
