WOMEN'S SOCCER: Scots Defeat Point Park, Start Season 1-0-1

Alma, Mi.- If the opening tournament of the 2007 season is any indication of what is to come, the Alma College Women's Soccer team is heading for a much improved season from a year ago as after their first weekend of play the Scots sit with a record of 1-0-1.

Coming off of a 2-2 tie against La Roche on Saturday, the Scots took the field against Point Park and dominated the ball, controlled the tempo, and imposed their style of play on their way to a 2-0 win.

The Scots got on the board in the 25th minute when the Point Park goalkeeper swatted away a shot from freshman Sarah Merritt (Lake Orion/Lake Orion) and Alma freshman Jessica Swan (Romeo/Romeo) was right their to drive the ball into the back of the net. The goal was Swan's second of the tournament.

Alma College got their second goal of the game in the 68th minute as the Point Park goalkeeper was unable to clear the ball and Swan made Point Park pay for the second time in the game with an unassisted goal.

The Scots defense was almost inpenetrable as they only allowed four shots all game to Alma College's 14. Getting the split shutout for the Scots was freshman Alexandra Kirchner (Racine, WI/Washington Park), who got her first collegiate start and saved both shots she faced, and senior Ivyrose Hess (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Central), who protected the Scots lead in the second half.

Coach Hosler had this to say about what he saw from his team this weekend: "We imposed our style of play all weekend and we learned a lot about eachother and the way we can play. We also played all 19 of our healthy players this weekend, so we got some much needed experience."

The Scots next take the field against Heidelberg College on Sept. 5 for their home opener. The game is scheduled to start at 5 p.m.

Alma College’s teacher preparation program was rated “exemplary” in 2007 following a comprehensive review by the Michigan Department of Education.
