WOMEN'S SOCCER: A Look to the 2007 Season
Alma, Mi.- Alma College women's soccer is building. After a 2006 season in which the Scots finished 4-11-2 on the season and tied for seventh in the MIAA, head coach Jeff Hosler has been successful on the recruiting trail throughout the winter and spring months while putting his returning players through spring practices on Alma's campus.
"It was very clear that the returning players worked hard in the winter months to better
themselves in order to be prepared for our spring season," remarked Hosler. "With only 11 players set to return from last year's roster, I felt it was a great opportunity to work on individual technique and development, and we have seen great strides in both areas."
Six starters return to the Alma lineup in the fall 2007 season, including three members of the class of 2010-Tara Fitzsimmons, Kelly Walsh and Britini Patrick- along with junior captain Christine Wheatley, senior Kim Hoeltzel and senior goalkeeper Ivy Hess. These five field players accounted for 16 of Alma's 22 goals in the 2006 season, and Hess played every minute of the 2006 campaign in the net.
The women's soccer team is a very young team in 2007 as the Scots have more freshman on the roster than all returning players combined. This dynamic makes it imperative for
Hosler's group to mesh well and learn the team's system in the first few weeks of pre-season camp and competition.
And so far, with just a few practices under their belt, Hosler has reason to feel good about the 2007 season.
"I am confident that we will be able to put a very competitive team on the field every game, regardless of the opponent," stated Hosler. "I would also look for us to continue to build an exciting brand of soccer with players who like to take people on and attack creatively. I truly believe we will be contending for an MIAA title in the near future."
That belief and the building blocks Hosler continues to add to Alma College women's soccer will make 2007 a season to watch.
