ALMA, Mich. - Freshman Kelley Walsh (Linden/Fenton) has earned second team All-MIAA honors after a successful 2006 season. Walsh led the team in points with 16, scoring eight goals from her forward position. She landed over 67 percent of her shots on goal, generating 31 scoring opportunities. With five goals in league play she ended the MIAA season tied for fourth in goals-scored and tied for eighth in total points with 10. Under the direction of first-year head coach Jeff Hosler, Alma College women’s soccer scored more goals this season than in either of the previous two years with the help of this year’s MIAA honorees.
Rachel Comfort, a senior leader for the Maroon and Cream, scored five goals and added two assists this season, second on the team in points to only Kelley Walsh. She was the go-two clutch player, converting on two penalty kick opportunities for the year.
Sophomore Christine Wheatley keyed a Scot defense that allowed fewer goals in MIAA action than in 2004 or 2005. She started in 16 of 17 games played this season. She registered her lone goal of the season in a 3-2 double overtime loss to Kalamazoo on Oct. 11.
Junior Kim Hoeltzel started all 17 games for the Scots, scoring a goal and adding an assist as a Scot midfielder. Freshman Tara Fitzsimmons, a speedy forward, was the team leader in shots with 40, landing 25 on goal, scoring four goals and adding three assists in her first year at the collegiate level. Finally, senior Elizabeth Daley battled against injury throughout the season, starting 13 games and notching an assist in her final season with the Scots.
Led by strong underclassmen with a standard set by this year’s seniors, Hosler’s inaugural season at the helm of the women’s soccer program met success in a season of rebuilding.
