Comfort Scores With 23 Seconds Remaining in Double Overtime to Give Scots First Scotland Yard Win of Season

Box Score

ALMA, Mich. - Alma College women's soccer picked up its first home win of the season Sunday afternoon, but it took double overtime to notch the 2-1 win over visiting La Roche College (Pa.) at Scotland Yard. Alma improves to 2-3 on the season while La Roche falls to 1-2 for the year.

Alma opened scoring when freshman Kelly Walsh (Linden/Fenton) scored in the third minute, taking the ball into the box, down the right side where she scored easily, unassisted. They continued to attack throughout the game, out-shooting La Roche 12-5 in 110 minutes of play.

But the Redhawks countered with a goal of their own in the 13th minutes from Jemma Devlin. The score would remain tied for the next 97 minutes - despite the Scots maintaining the shot advantage five-to-one in the second half.

With 23 seconds remaining in the game, freshman Britni Patrick (North Muskegon) sent a ball across the front of the net and a scrambling La Roche goalkeeper was out of position and Rachel Comfort (Eastpointe/South Lake) capitalized, giving the Scots a 2-1 sudden victory.

Goalkeeper Ivyrose Hess (Grand Rapids/G.R. Central) had five saves and one goal against in 110 minutes in goal for the Maroon and Cream.

Alma returns to action Sept. 14 at Scotland Yard when it hosts Calumet College of St. Joseph at 5 p.m.
