Alma Women's Basketball loses to Concordia 63-56

The Alma Women's Basketball team continued their season on Wednesday evening by hosting Concordia University (MI), an NAIA school in Ann Arbor. The Scots dropped a 63-56 decision to the Cardinals at Cappaert Gymnasium to fall to 0-6 on the 2009-10 campaign, while the visitors went home with a 4-4 record.

In a game marked by tough defense on both sides, resulting in 50 total turnovers between the two teams, the score was just 13-10 for Concordia at the midway point of the first frame.  The Cardinals used a 16-8 run to go ahead by a margin of 29-18 with 4:46 left in the half. Alma finished the first 20 minutes on a 11-4 run of their own, and Concordia went into halftime with a 33-29 advantage.

Albeit sloppy at times, the second half was very competitive. In fact, Alma had its only lead of the contest at 37-35, when Sr. G Lauren Hasler (Mount Pleasant, MI/Sacred Heart) was good on a jumper with 15:58 left in the game. Concordia never led by more than four points until the 10:53 mark, when they hit a free throw to go up 42-37.

The Scots have no quit in them however, and kept pushing back their NAIA rivals from Ann Arbor. They cut Concordia's lead to 52-51 with 4:06 remaining, when Sr. G Lacey Best-Rowden (Lansing, MI/Waverly) made good on a shot from the charity stripe.

Lacey Best-Rowden, the team leader in assists, had eight for the Scots on Wednesday evening against Concordia

The Cardinals scored the next seven points however, and Alma was not able to recover once again. Concordia methodically used the clock and made just enough free throws to hold off the home team and walked off the court with the seven-point victory at 63-56.

Sr. F Meagan Hoblet (Cadillac, MI/Cadillac) led all Alma scorers with 14 points on six of 12 shooting, while Jr. F Sydney Beckwith (Weidman, MI/Beal City) chipped in with 13. Three other players had nine points each for the Scots, while Best-Rowden led the team with eight assists on the evening. Beckwith had seven rebounds for the Scots, while Sr. F Kathryn Bigelow (Alma, MI/Alma) had five boards.

The Scots will begin MIAA play on Saturday afternoon, when league rival Adrian College comes calling. The game is scheduled for a 3:00 p.m. start at Cappaert Gymnasium and marks the last home game for Alma until January 9, when they host MIAA foe Albion College in an afternoon match-up. The team plays five road games, including a league game at Hope College, before returning home.
