ALMA WOMEN'S BASKETBALL FALLS TO ALBION 68-47

The Alma Women’s Basketball team took part in the 2009 Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) PinkZone Initiative for Breast Cancer Awareness on Wednesday evening, when they hosted Albion College at Cappaert Gymnasium. On a night that had greater meaning than the outcome of the game, the Scots dropped a 68-47 decision to Albion, dropping Alma to 6-9 in MIAA action and 8-15 overall, while the Brits improved to 8-7 in the league and 13-10 in 2008-09.

Albion took conrol early and jumped out to a 10-0 lead just four minutes into the game. From that point on, it was a struggle for the Scots, although they did cut the deficit to four points. Alma went on a 15-7 run in the latter part of the half, and made the score 27-23, when Jr. F Meagan Hoblet (Cadillac, MI/Cadillac) hit a lay-up at the 2:56 mark. The Brits hit a couple of big shots towards the end of the half and had a 32-24 advantage after 20 minutes of play.

Alma shot 33% from the field in the first half on nine of 27 shooting, including four of nine from beyond the arc, while Albion closed out the half with 42% shooting (11 for 26) and was good on two of seven three-pointers. A big factor in the initial frame was the Britons’ dominance on the boards, as they out-rebounded the Scots by a margin of 27-9, including 10 offensive boards to three for Alma.

After the Scots hit the first basket of the second half, Albion never let the home team get any closer and led by 14 points, 50-36, at the mid-point of the final frame. Alma fought hard until the end, but a sharp-shooting Albion squad was not be denied on this evening. The Britons outscored the Scots, 36-23, in the half and walked away from Cappaert with the 68-47 victory.

The Britons shot an impressive 58% in the second half on 15 of 26 shooting (two of six from three-point land), while the home team hit on 41% of their shots, going nine of 22, but zero for seven from beyond the arc. Albion had a 15-11 rebounding advantage and had seven steals on nine Alma turnovers in the half.

For the game, Albion finished right at 50% shooting (26 for 52), while Alma checked in at 37%, making 18 of 49 attempts. The Britons had the advantage on the boards at 42-20, but Alma had 13 turnovers to Albion’s 16.

Individually, Alma was led in scoring by Hoblet’s 14 points, while Jr. G Lacey Best-Rowden (Lansing, MI/Waverly) added nine points. So. F Sydney Beckwith (Weidman, MI/Beal City) had a team-high four rebounds and also notched seven points, while Jr. F Kathryn Bigelow (Alma, MI/Alma) had seven assists and six points.

The Scots finish the 2008-09 regular season on Saturday afternoon, when they host Adrian College at Cappaert Gymnasium. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.

Box Score

Spring Term at Alma is a one-month immersion on a single academic topic that offers learning experiences not typically available during the more traditional 15-week fall and winter terms. For example, during Spring Term '09, students toured cultural sites in Peru, studied alternative energy in Sweden, analyzed theatre and dance in London, and examined Native American culture at the Crazy Horse Memorial in South Dakota.
