THE SCOTS DROP A LEAGUE GAME AT TRINE

Alma’s Women’s basketball team traveled to Trine University on Saturday aftternoon and ended up on the losing end of a 66-55 decision. The loss dropped the Scots to 6-8 in league play and 8-14 overall on the season. Trine improved to 9-6 in the MIAA and 12-11 in 2008-09.

The first half saw five different lead changes as neither team had a lead larger than four points in the entire half. Alma’s biggest lead was at three points, two different times,  when So. F Sydney Beckwith (Weidman, MI/Weidman) hit a jumper for a 10-7 Alma lead at the 13:04 mark and then again when Jr. G Lacey Best-Rowden (Lansing, MI/Waverly) knocked down a three-pointer for a 26-23 Scots lead with 2:19 left in the half. The Thunder scored the final five points of the half to take a 28-26 advantage into halftime.

Alma shot 35% from the field in the first half (10 of 29), including three of ten from behind the three-point line, while Trine was 10 of 23 (44%) in the first half. The Thunder hit four of ten from beyond the arc in the first frame.

The second half started out tough for the Scots, as the home team outscored them by a margin of 19-8 in the first nine minutes, to take a 47-34 lead. Alma fought hard for the remainder of the contest, but was not able to get closer than eight points, when Best-Rowden hit a lay-up at 1:17 to make the score 60-52.

The Scots were led in scoring by Jr. F Megan Hoblet (Cadillac, MI/Cadillac), who had 14 points, while Best-Rowden added 13 points on the afternoon. Jr. F Kathryn Bigelow (Alma, MI/Alma) notched 11 points, while Sr. G Heather Keenan (Charlotte, MI/Charlotte) had ten points. Bigelow had a team-high four assists, while Fr. G Cassie Kopke (Haslet, MI/Haslet) added three assits.

Alma will next play, when they host Albion College, on Wednesday evening at 6:00 p.m. at Cappaert Gymnasium.

Cheyenne Luzynski

Alma College Athletics appointed Cheyenne Luzynski as head volleyball coach beginning with the 2007 spring non-traditional season. Luzynski is the eighth head coach in the 31-year history of Alma College volleyball.

Luzynski has served as an assistant volleyball coach for two seasons and has led the junior varsity program during that time. She has served as an assistant coach with the men’s basketball program, leading its junior varsity program and is an assistant coach with the men’s and women’s track and field teams at Alma College. Additionally, Luzynski has been named an assistant Athletic Director and serves as the Senior Woman Administrator within the department.
