ALMA WOMEN'S BASKETBALL DEFEATS KALAMAZOO 61-51

 

On Wednesday evening, the Alma Women's Basketball team hosted league rival Kalamazoo College and came away with a 61-51 MIAA victory at Cappaert Gymnasium. The win improved the Scots to 7-12 on the season and 5-6 in league play, while the Hornets dropped to 0-12 in the MIAA and 0-18 overall in 2008-09.

Alma jumped out to an 18-point lead after one half at 41-23. The Scots shot a sizzling 67% from the field, on 18 of 27 shooting, while they held Kzoo to just 33% field goal shooting (eight of 24). Each team hit three shots from outside the arc in the first frame.

The Hornets did not quit and made a game of it, only to come up on the short end of the 10-point game. The second half was a sharp contrast in shooting as Alma struggled at just 29% (eight of 28) from the field, while the Hornets heated up. Kalamazoo was good on 10 of 21 shots (47%), including four of six from three-point range and the Hornets made the Scots fight to the finish.

While the Hornets had a slight 31-30 rebound advantage, the Scots were able to force 22 Kalamazoo turnovers to just 14 for the home team. Alma had a 10 to four advantage in defensive steals on the evening.

Jr. F Kathryn Bigelow (Alma,MI/Alma) led the Scots with 15 points and shared the team lead in rebounds with seven, with Jr. Stephanie Bradshaw (Livonia,MI/Churchill). Bigelow also led the sqaud with six assists and shared the team high in steals with three, with Sr. G Heather Keenan (Charlotte, MI/Charlotte)

Other scoring leaders on Wednesday evening included Bradshaw with 14 points and Jr. G Lacey Best-Rowden with 12. Jr. F Meagan Hoblet (Cadillac, MI/Cadillac) added eight points and a team-high two blocked shots.

Alma tries to reach the .500 mark in MIAA play on Saturday, when they host St. Mary's College. Tip-off at Cappaert Gymnasium is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.

Coach Profile

Gordon Aldrich

Gordon Aldrich was a late addition to the Alma College Coaching Staff in the summer of 2007. Coach Aldrich has joined the Alma College Family as the Cross Country and Track and Field Head Coach.

During his 26 years as a varsity Boy’s and Girl’s Cross Country Coach, Aldrich has won a Girls Open State Championship (1978), a Girls State Championship (1995), two Boy’s State Championships (1994, 1997), and was Runner-up on seven other occasions. During the same time, Aldrich coached teams to 17 conference championships, was nominated for the Michigan Interscholastic Track Coaches Association Coach of the Year 12 times for cross country, and walked away with the award four times (1994, 1995, 1996, and 1998). He was also named the Boy’s Cross Country National Coach of the Year in 1999 by the National Federation Interscholastic Coaches Association.

Aldrich was also honored with Michigan High School Coaches Association Track Coach of the Year in 1985 and 1998, and has received the Charles Sweeney Michigan Coaches Hall of Fame Track and Field Award.
