ALMA WOMEN'S BASKETBALL DROPS HOME CONTEST AGAINST TRINE

The Alma Women’s Basketball team hosted Trine University Saturday and dropped a 53-33 decision to the Thunder. The defeat dropped the Scots to 3-4 in the MIAA and 4-10 overall, while Trine improved to 4-4 in the league and 7-9 all together for the 2008-09 season.

After an Alma turnover to begin the game, Trine Sr., G Jordan Loveberry hit a three-pointer for a 3-0 lead and the Thunder never looked back, as they led from wire-to-wire on the afternoon. Trine extended their lead to 21-10 late in the first half, but two lay-ups by Jr., F Meagan Hoblet (Cadillac, MI/Cadillac) cut the Scots’ deficit to 21-14 at halftime.

Alma shot just 29% in the opening frame but displayed very good defense as the Thunder was only 30% in the half, including just one of eight from behind the three-point line. Neither team shot a free throw in the first half and the Thunder out-rebounded the Scots by a margin of 23-17.

The Scots cut the lead to three at 22-19 at the 18:05 mark of the second half when Hoblet made the first of two free throws and were still within four points five minutes into the final frame. However, a 14-5 run over the next seven minutes gave Trine a 40-27 lead and Alma never was able to get closer than 11 points the rest of the way.

Both teams shot at a better clip in the second half as the Scots hit on 39% of their shots, while the Thunder finished at 44% in the frame. A telling stat for Alma on this afternoon was the 19 turnovers that resulted in 13 Trine points and the Thunder was able to record 12 steals against the Scots.

Hoblet led the team with seven points and six rebounds, while Sr., G Heather Keenan (Charlotte, MI/Charlotte) added six points. So., F Sydney Beckwith (Weidman, MI/Beal City) finished with five points and shared the team-lead with six boards. Jr., F Kathryn Bigelow (Alma, MI/Alma) chipped in with five rebounds for the Scots, while So., G Hannah Hewitt (Alanson, MI/Harbor Light Christian) and Bigelow each had team-high with three assists.
