WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Scots Get First Home Win in Dominating Fashion

Alma, Mi.- The Alma College Women's Basketball Team (2-4) hosted Rochester College for a Saturday game and sent brought home the win in a big way with a dominating 72-27 blow out performance.

Leading the way for the Scots was outstanding Senior Ashley Matuzak (Saginaw/Nouvel Catholic Central) who scored 17 points and added four assists. Meagan Hoblet (Cadillac/Cadillac) continued to play solid for the Scots, pulling down five boards and recording 10 points.

The rest of the Scots got into action today as all but one member on the team scored points in the game including four players besides, Matuzak and Hoblet, who scored atleast seven points in the route. The Scouts also out rebounded the Warriors by 15 and had a much improved shooting percentage than in games passed as they finished with a solid 47% from the field.

The competition will get a little tougher in their next game as they open their MIAA conference schedule with a home game against Kalamazoo College next Saturday with a tip-off time of 3:00 p.m.

More than 100 Alma College students and staff traveled to destinations in New Mexico, Tennessee, Philadelphia, Louisiana and North Carolina for service projects during winter break in February 2007. “Alternative Break service experiences continue to gain popularity on Alma College’s campus,” says Sallie Scheide, assistant director in the Center for Responsible Leadership.

One of the top Division III coaches in the nation, Charlie Goffnett has built the Alma women's basketball program into a national powerhouse. With three MIAA titles, five NCAA Tournament berths and one national championship under his belt, Goffnett is one of the most accomplished coaches in the nation.

Charlie Goffnett began coaching the women's golf team in 1990. As head coach, he has established a competitive program that is always on or near the top of the MIAA standings. In 1997, the Scots captured their third MIAA title under Goffnett's guidance.
