MIAA Tournament Play Begins Tuesday as Scots Head to St. Mary's

ALMA, Mich. - Alma College women's basketball begins play in the MIAA Tournament Tuesday (Feb. 20) when it travels to Notre Dame, Ind., to face the St. Mary's Belles. St. Mary's enters the game with a 10-6 MIAA record and is the tournament's No. 3 seed while the Scots are seeded sixth with a 6-10 record.

Alma opened the MIAA season against St. Mary's in 2006, losing 72-60 to the Belles, led by an Ashley Matuzak 27-point, 12-rebound double-double. When St. Mary's made the return trip to Alma, the Scots lost 66-58 as Matuzak led Alma's scorers again with 14 points while Emily Niemi added an 11-point, 14-rebound double-double.

Alma enters the tournament on a three-game losing skid, dropping games to Olivet, Hope and Calvin down the stretch. Prior to going cold, the Scots rattled off three consecutive wins over Tri-State, Kalamazoo and Adrian.

The MIAA Tournament begins today (Feb. 19) when Kalamazoo and Adrian square off in the play-in game at Adrian. The winner of that game will turn around and head to Calvin tomorrow (Feb. 20) to face the No. 1 seed Knights, who went a perfect 16-0 in MIAA action this season. The MIAA Tournament seeding is as follows:

5. Olivet
6. Alma
7. Tri-State
8. Adrian

Charlie Goffnett

Charlie Goffnett

One of the top Division III coaches in the nation, Charlie Goffnett has built the Alma women's basketball program into a national powerhouse. With three MIAA titles, five NCAA Tournament berths and one national championship under his belt, Goffnett is one of the most accomplished coaches in the nation.

Charlie Goffnett began coaching the women's golf team in 1990. As head coach, he has established a competitive program that is always on or near the top of the MIAA standings. In 1997, the Scots captured their third MIAA title under Goffnett's guidance.
