Matuzak Named All-Tournament As Scots Lose To Heidelberg

Alma women's basketball fell to 4-5 on the season with a 60-47 loss to tournament host Heidelberg Saturday evening.

Alma was led by Ashley Matuzak's (Saginaw/Nouvel) 14 points and seven rebounds as she earned All-Tournament honors. Courtney Lusk added nine points.

Turnovers proved costly for the Scots, committing 27 turnovers to Heidelberg's 12.

Alma was down 23-21 at the half, but came out slow in the second half as Heidelberg out-scored the Scots 37-26 in the final stanza.

Alma returns to action Jan. 2 when it hosts Albion College at 7:30 p.m.

 

In the more than 100 years since its founding, Alma has stayed true to its roots by keeping its Scottish heritage alive. Today, Alma features a marching band clad in Kilts, a Scottish dance troupe, student pipers and its own tartan. Each year, the College hosts the Alma Highland Festival and Games, which feature traditional Scottish games and revelry.

Charlie Goffnett

One of the top Division III coaches in the nation, Charlie Goffnett has built the Alma women's basketball program into a national powerhouse. With three MIAA titles, five NCAA Tournament berths and one national championship under his belt, Goffnett is one of the most accomplished coaches in the nation.

Charlie Goffnett began coaching the women's golf team in 1990. As head coach, he has established a competitive program that is always on or near the top of the MIAA standings. In 1997, the Scots captured their third MIAA title under Goffnett's guidance.
