Alma Defeats Juniata In Holiday Classic

The Alma College Scots never trailed in the ballgame but held off the Juniata College Eagles 60-54 Friday night in the Heidelberg Holiday Alumni Classic. Alma improves to 4-4 while Juniata falls to 7-2 on the season.

Leading the Scots in the win was Ashley Mutuzak with 12 points. Abigail Way contributed 11 points while Emily Niemi grabbed a team-leading 10 boards.

Kelly Ashcraft led the Eagles with 20 points and six rebounds, while Jess Winemiller contribited 15 points and six boards.

Leading 11-10, Alma went on a 10-2 run to open their largest lead at 21-12 with 3:45 remaining in the first half. The Scots led 28-20 before Juniata's Ali Meckey scored a lay-up and Winemiller hit a shot from the wing to cut the Alma lead to 28-25 at intermission.

Juniata rallied in the second half, cutting the lead to one at 41-40 with 10:19 left, but Alma would answer with a 7-0 run started by a Way 3-pointer. The Scots held on for the six-point win.

The Eagles outrebounded the Scots 38-36 for the contest. Alma made the most of their shots, hitting 46.8 percent (22-47), including 54.5 percent (12-22) in the second half. Juniata made 19 of 64 shots (29.7 percent).

Juniata returns to action tomorrow in the consolation game of the Heidelberg Holiday Alumni contest at 1 p.m. Alma will play in the championship game at 3 p.m.

Charlie Goffnett

One of the top Division III coaches in the nation, Charlie Goffnett has built the Alma women's basketball program into a national powerhouse. With three MIAA titles, five NCAA Tournament berths and one national championship under his belt, Goffnett is one of the most accomplished coaches in the nation.

Charlie Goffnett began coaching the women's golf team in 1990. As head coach, he has established a competitive program that is always on or near the top of the MIAA standings. In 1997, the Scots captured their third MIAA title under Goffnett's guidance.
