Scots Stumble in 59-56 Neutral Site Loss

CENTREVILLE, Mich. - Alma College squared off against Mt. St. Joseph at Glen Oaks Community College, falling to MSJ 59-56.

Alma led 34-26 at halftime, but MSJ came out hot, playing tough defense in the second half, out-scoring the Scots 33-22 in the second stanza to narrowly defeat the Maroon and Cream, 59-56. Alma is now 2-1 on the season.

Junior Ashley Matuzak (Saginaw/Nouvel Catholic) led the team with 23 points and nine boards while Heather Keenan (Charlotte) added 15 points and Ashley Wojtas (Kent City) had 12.

Alma returns to action Nov. 25 when it travels to Siena Heights.

One of the top Division III coaches in the nation, Charlie Goffnett has built the Alma women's basketball program into a national powerhouse. With three MIAA titles, five NCAA Tournament berths and one national championship under his belt, Goffnett is one of the most accomplished coaches in the nation.

Charlie Goffnett began coaching the women's golf team in 1990. As head coach, he has established a competitive program that is always on or near the top of the MIAA standings. In 1997, the Scots captured their third MIAA title under Goffnett's guidance.
