Women's Basketball

Maroon and Cream Prepare for 2006-07; MIAA Tele-Conference Transcripts Available

ALMA, Mich. - The Alma College women's basketball team looks younger this season. With just one starter returning from last year's team, Alma will be learning the ropes of the college game early in the season. Junior Ashley Matuzak (Saginaw/Nouvel Catholic) returns as the lone starter from last season. A key part of the Scots on both ends of the court, the challenge will be game experience for those surrounding her on the court.

Head coach Charlie Goffnett's comments from MIAA Tele-conference:

"The Scots lost four starters off a 13-12 team. We're going to be in the re-building, re-discovering mode.

"We have a lot of transitional players who will be asked to do different things than they did last year. For example, we'll have several players going from subs to starters this season. More than half our roster is freshmen and we're just trying to figure each other out."

On only returning starter, Ashley Matuzak:
"Ashley Matuzak started for us at power forward and small forward. She comes from Saginaw Nouvel, a great program. She is a real tough, determined, hard-nosed kid. She's a lunch pail player and comes to work hard every day. She's done a nice job for us as the lone returning starter. We have a menagerie of players that we're looking at for the other four spots. It's a position I haven't found myself in in a long, long time - if ever - at Alma College. As good as our league is, it's not a great time to bring a young team to the forefront."

Alma College is among the six percent of all colleges and universities in the nation to hold membership in The Phi Beta Kappa Society, the nation’s oldest and most prestigious undergraduate honors organization.
