Darcie Philp Garners First Team All-MIAA Accolades

The women's basketball team bowed out of the 2006 MIAA Tournament with a loss to Calvin last week, ending the season at 13-12 (7-9 MIAA). The conference announced its post-season honors Monday evening and senior forward Darcie Philp (Ubly) garnered first team All-MIAA honors while classmate Katey Peacock (Gowen/Greenville) landed a second team nod. Ashley Borcherding (Millington) Erica Philp (Ubly) and Ashley Matuzak (Saginaw/Nouvel Catholic) were recongized with coaches honorable mention honors.

Philp transferred to Alma in the middle of the 2004-05 campaign and made an immediate impact and returned for her senior season to anchor the Scots. Starting all but one game of the season, she averaged over 33 minutes per game. Her scoring average of 15.8 points led the Scots and she also averaged 8.6 boards per game. Her 23 blocks led the team. It is the first MIAA honor for Philp.

Peacock earned second team All-MIAA honors after averaging 13.8 points per game. She scored her 1,000th career point against Albion in January, making her one of just 12 women in the history of the sport at Alma to reach that milestone. Peacock shot nearly 90 percent from the free throw line, leading the team in that category, also leading the team in assists with a 3.0 average per game.

Borcherding was the floor leader for the Scots at the point, averaging 11.0 points per game and leading the team in three-point field goal percentage, making 44 percent of her attempts from beyond the arc.

Matuzak was a continual threat on the floor and averaged over 10 points per game. The team's second-leading rebounder, the sophomore averaged 6.5 boards per game and shot over 48 percent from the field for the season.

Erica Philp was a critical element to post play for the Scots and averaged 8.3 points and 5.7 rebounds per game. She was second only to her sister Darcie in field goal percentage, making over 50 percent of her shots on the season.

More than 100 Alma College students and staff traveled to destinations in Georgia, Tennessee, Florida and Mississippi for service projects during winter break in February 2008. Alternative Break service experiences continue to gain popularity on Alma College’s campus,” says Sallie Scheide, assistant director in the Center for Responsible Leadership.
