Maroon and Cream Snap Four-Game Losing Skid with Victory at Tri-State

ANGOLA, Ind. - The Alma College women's basketball team snapped a four-game losing skid with a 68-50 victory against Tri-State tonight. The win improves the Scots' record to 9-9 (4-7 MIAA). Sophomore Ashley Matuzak (Saginaw/Nouvel Catholic) scored 15 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to lead the Scots with her double-double, the third of the season for Matuzak.

Senior Katey Peacock (Gowen/Greenville) led the Scots with 18 points while Darcie Philp (Ubly) added 14 points and nine boards.

A low-scoring first half - Alma led 24-18 - opened the doors for a 44-point second half for the Scots while Tri-State scored 32.

Alma's post play proved to give them a 14-point advantage, generating 28 points in the paint to the Thunder's 10.

The Scots return to action Saturday (Feb. 4) when it hosts Kalamazoo College at 4 p.m. for Scot Appreciation Day, a celebration for the community and campus. Alma College students are annual high achievers in the national Model United Nations competition. Alma has received Outstanding Delegation awards in each of the last 12 years (1997 through 2008) at the world’s largest and most prestigious collegiate Model UN Conference in New York City.

Charlie Goffnett

One of the top Division III coaches in the nation, Charlie Goffnett has built the Alma women's basketball program into a national powerhouse. With three MIAA titles, five NCAA Tournament berths and one national championship under his belt, Goffnett is one of the most accomplished coaches in the nation.

Charlie Goffnett began coaching the women's golf team in 1990. As head coach, he has established a competitive program that is always on or near the top of the MIAA standings. In 1997, the Scots captured their third MIAA title under Goffnett's guidance.
