Scots Fall to Cornerstone in Scotty's Shootout Championship

ALMA, Mich. - The Alma College women's basketball team fell to 5-4 (0-2 MIAA) with a 79-69 overtime loss to Cornerstone in the championship of Alma College's Scotty's Shootout tonight. Sophomore Ashley Matuzak (Saginaw/Nouvel Catholic) led the team on the weekend, earning All-Tournament honors for her efforts.

The Scots were down by nine points at halftime and battled through the first 10 minutes of the second half before they look the lead late in the second. With the score tied seven times and six lead changes, overtime seemed immiment - and it was. The Scots led by three down the stretch and played solid defense before Cornerstone's Amanda Pasma sunk a three pointer with one second remaining in regulation, sending the game into OT. Again, turnovers cost the Scots dearly as the team registered 16, leading to 22 Cornerstone points.

The Golden Eagles headed to overtime without eventual Tournament MVP Katie Anderson who fouled out with 16 points and four rebounds, two assists, a block and two steals. That gave the Scots a slight advantage, but when Matuzak fouled out a minute into the extra period, it seemed to take the wind out of the Scots' sails. Alma's last field goal came with 3:18 remaining in overtime. The Scots were outscored 12-2 in the overtime period. Matuzak ended the game with 16 points and six assists, three steals and nine rebounds.

Other key contributors for the Scots included Darcie Philp (Ubly) with 14 points and 11 rebounds while Erica Philp (Ubly) added 11 points and 10 rebounds. Ashley Borcherding (Millington) had 12 points to roundout scorers for the Scots.

The Scots next play Jan. 3 when they travel to Albion College for an MIAA matchup in the new year.
