Scots Defeat The Apprentice School, 83-52

ALMA, Mich. - The Alma College women's basketball team defeated The Apprentice School, 83-52, to advance to the championship round of the Alma College Scotty's Shootout. With the win, the Scots improve to 5-3 season.

Alma led by more than 20 points at halftime, holding the Lady Builders to just 28 points in the first stanza.

The Scots were led by Darcie Philp (Ubly), who recorded a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Erica Philp (Ubly) added 11 rebounds to go with six points.

Other scorers included Katey Peacock (Gowen/Greenville) with 14 points and Ashley Borcherding (Millington) with 13 points, three assists and three steals. Ashley Matuzak (Saginaw/Nouvel Catholic) had 12 points and four assists and a steal.

Alma advances to the championship round of Scotty's Shootout where they face Cornerstone at 6 p.m.

 

The Alma College Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) team claimed its eighth consecutive regional championship at the SIFE USA Regional Competition in March 2008. The competition awards the SIFE teams that are most effective in teaching the principals of market economics through outreach projects in their communities.

One of the top Division III coaches in the nation, Charlie Goffnett has built the Alma women's basketball program into a national powerhouse. With three MIAA titles, five NCAA Tournament berths and one national championship under his belt, Goffnett is one of the most accomplished coaches in the nation.

Charlie Goffnett began coaching the women's golf team in 1990. As head coach, he has established a competitive program that is always on or near the top of the MIAA standings. In 1997, the Scots captured their third MIAA title under Goffnett's guidance.
